Tad Smith was born on March 29, 1987 and grew up in Isleton, California. He attended St. Mary's High School where he lettered for 3 years in basketball and recorded a school-record 18 sacks.

Tad Smith redshirted in 2005, was injured and out in 2006, by 2007 played in all 13 games with 3 starts.

Only in spring of 2008 did Tad Smith convert from defensive end to tight end and the transition seems to be going well. During the 2008 season, he had 3 catches for 23 yards and one touchdown. Unfortunately, during spring training in 2009, he broke his scapula and will be out for up to 6 months.
