Rulon Davis' route to the University of California has been much more indirect than those of his teammates. Davis graduated from high school in 2001 after playing primarily on the offensive line. He left his hometown of San Diego, California to serve in the Marines for 3 years immediately following high school.

When Rulon Davis returned from his tour of duty, he joined the Mt. San Antonio Community College football squad where he played well his freshman year in 2004 and redshirted in 2005.

In 2006, Rulon Davis was officially a California Bears football member. He played in 6 games and recorded 5 tackles before being sidelined with a severe bone bruise injury. In 2007, was supposed to be a starter, but injury again plagued him and he played in only a handful of games. In spite of this, Davis managed to record 16 tackles with 3 for loss.
