DJ Campbell was born on July 24, 1989 and grew up in North Las Vegas, Nevada. He attended Cheyenne High School and graduated in 2007 after accumulating several honors. He had 61 tackles and 8 interceptions, half of which were returned for touchdowns.

DJ Campbell signed with the Cal Golden Bears then decided to redshirt his freshman season in 2007. Meanwhile he earned Scout Team Player of the Year honors to recognize his hard work.

In 2008, DJ Campbell was a safety but saw little playing time. Campbell definitely stepped it up in the following two seasons.
