Bryan Anger chose to redshirt his freshman season in 2007.

By 2008, Brian Anger was recognized as one of the top punters in the U.S. and three different news sources named him as a first-team Freshman All-American. Brian Anger was the only freshman named as a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award. Another award quickly followed: he was named the Cal Bears football team's most valuable freshman.
