Brett Ackerman grew up in Venice, California and his high school team, Loyola High School, was also home to fellow Cal Bears football player Chris Conte.

In 2008, Brett Ackerman's senior year was strong. He had 38 receptions, three of which ended in touchdowns. Twenty-two of those 38 were first down conversions.

On the defensive side, Brett Ackerman helped with 19 tackles and two blocked field goal attempts. Based on these successes, Ackerman made First Team All-Serra League and he was hailed as Most Valuable Receiver.
