Alex Mack hails from Santa Barbara, California and graduated from San Marco High School. As a high school athlete, Alex Mack was a member of an offensive line that rushed for 2,031 yards in 2003. He was also a heavy weight wrestler who advanced to the state tournament his senior year.
After redshirting in 2004, Alex Mack played in 7 games in 2005. At that point, he was primarily a back-up on the offensive line. He earned Academic All-American Honors for his athletic and academic performances.
In 2006, Alex Mack had a breakout year and started all 13 games at center. He was voted as the Most Improved Offensive Line after his success.
By 2007, Alex Mack was on fire. He again started all games and was selected as a finalist for the Rimington Trophy as the top center in the nation. This prestigious award was soon followed by others: top offensive lineman in the Pac-10, number 3 center in the nation by The Sporting News, and the Morris Trophy as the top offensive lineman in the Pac-10.
