The Pacific Ten Conference competes in top Division-I play in 22 different varsity sports. The name Pacific Ten stuck in 1978 after testing out a couple other names as the conference grew, like Big Five, Big Six, and Pacific 8. Thomas Hansen is head of the Pacific Ten Conference, and will retire in July 2009 after an impressive 26 years of service.
The Pacific Ten Conference is one of the top in country. Here's a quick rundown of the member schools:
University of Arizona Wildcats
Arizona State SunDevils
California Berkeley Golden Bears
Oregon Ducks
Oregon State Beavers
Stanford Cardinals
California Los Angeles Bruins
Southern California Trojans
Washington Huskies
Washington State Cougars
These teams are relatively well-matched. The strongest rivalries tend to be between in-state teams, like the rivalry between Arizona and Arizona State or Washington and Washington State. Games can be fierce and crowded as community members, alumni, and students really get into the action.
